Say what?! These crazy, unknown facts about Friends are shocking and unexpected! But we still love our favourite TV show... In fact, maybe a little bit more.

1. When they first wrote the show, Joey and Monica were planned to be love interests.
2. Lisa Kudrow, aka Phoebe, was actually scared of the duck!

3. It took each episode around five hours to film.
4. Three voices from The Simpsons made guest appearances on the show: Dan Castellaneta (Homer, Krusty), Hank Azaria (Moe, Chief Wiggum, Apu) and Harry Shearer (Mr Burns, Smithers).

5. The original name for the show was "Insomnia Cafe"… It was renamed "Friends Like Us", then "Six of One" and then finally writers settled on "Friends".
6. The big white dog statue at Joey and Chandler's place actually belonged to Jennifer Aniston - a mate gave it to her as a good luck present when she first started the show.
7. "The One Where No One's Ready" is filmed entirely in Monica's apartment, because the show didn't have a budget big enough for any guests stars or additional sets.
8. By season 10 (the final season), all six actors were getting $1 million per episode.
9. Early on in 1997, the six main characters banded together to negotiate a salary increase to get $100 000 per episode. They were the first actors in TV series history to do this.
10. For the first season, they started on $22 000 per episode.
11. You know how Joey plays Dr Drake Remoray in Days Of Our Lives? Well, in real life, Jennifer Aniston's dad (John Aniston), played Victor Kiriakis on the REAL Days Of Our Lives.
12. Monica's apartment number changed from 5 to 20, when the writer's realised that 5 wouldn't be that high up on a New York apartment. They also changed Chandler and Joey's apartment number to 19 to correspond.
13. Courtney Cox plays Ross's YOUNGER sister Monica - but it real life, she's actually older than David Schwimmer.
14. Monica forgets the name of a guy she sleeps with in the pilot episode. This had the producers worried that this would turn the audience off her, so they handed out a survey to the studio audience asking whether they should change the plot. The audience voted against changing the plot.
15. Ross and Rachel. Rachel and Ross… It wasn't suppose to be like this! Writers never planned for their romance to be the central focus, but their story line developed because the chemistry between Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer was so strong.
16. "The One After Vegas" was dedicated to Courtney Cox and David Arquette's marriage - in the credits, every cast member has the surname Arquette added to the end of their real names.
17. You know when Phoebe is pregnant with her brother's triplets? This storyline was written in because Lisa Kudrow was pregnant in real life.
18. Jon Favreau and Jon Cryer both tried out for the role of Chandler. Later on, Jon Favreau guest starred as Monica's boyfriend Pete Beckett (the millionaire).

19. When they filmed cliff hangers, they never used live audiences - e.g. Ross and Emily's wedding.
20. Kathy Griffin and Jane Lynch both tried out for the role of Phoebe.
21. Bruce Willis guest starred as Ross's younger girlfriend Elizabeth's dad. Why? Because he lost a bet about whether his film The Whole Nine Yards (with Matthew Perry) would be number 1 in the box office on its opening weekend - he donated his fee to charity.

22. The cast huddled before the filming of each episode to wish each other luck.
23. When Phoebe and Mike get married, none of her relatives attend the wedding - including her twin Ursula, her dad Frank or her brother Frank Jr, or his kids who she gave birth to.
24. Hank Azaria, who guest stars as Phoebe's boyfriend David (the scientist), auditioned for the role of Joey.
25. Chandler's character is renowned for being awkward around women. this was tailored to Matthew Perry, who told the writers that he himself was extremely awkward around women.
26. The magna doodles on Joey and Chandler's door were drawn by crew member Paul Swain.
27. Before the show's pilot hit our TV screens, the cast was taken out for dinner to Caeser's Palace in Vegas to enjoy their "last shot at anonymity." They returned to the same casino to shoot Ross and Rachel's drunken wedding.

30. Phoebe and Chandler were only suppose to be supporting characters.
31. "The One Where Chandler Doesn't Like Dogs" reveals that Ross hates ice cream. But the season before this one, he and Elizabeth are filmed enjoying ice cream on a date.
32. NBC originally decided that Central Perk was too trendy, and wanted to set the show in a diner like Seinfeld.
33. NBC also originally thought the cast was too young, and asked the writers to include an older character to give advice to the cast members in their mid 20s.
34. Marcel was played by two monkeys - Katie and Monkey.
35. Initially, producers wanted Courtney Cox to play Rachel, but she wanted to play Monica because the character was so strong. We're not sure if she meant physically or mentally… Maybe both.

36. The orange couch in Central Perk was found in the basement of Warner Bros studio.
37. Ross stays 29-years-old for three years.
38. All six of the main characters have kissed at some point, EXCEPT Monica and Phoebe.

39. Monica and Chandler's twins are born 46 seconds apart.
40. June Gable plays Joey's agent Estelle… Did you know she also plays a nurse in the episode where Carol gives birth to Ben.
41. While Chandler and Monica were having trouble conceiving. In real life, so were Courtney Cox and David Arquette.
42. The famous frame on Monica's door originally had a mirror in it, but it was broken by a crew member during the early stages of filming the show, but producers thought it looked good without the mirror so they left it there up until the very last episode.
43. Poor Courtney Cox had to film the scene where Rachel gives birth to Emma straight after having a miscarriage.
44. Joey wasn't originally written as a dumb character. It was a suggestion by Matt LeBlanc.
45. Giovanni Ribisi, who plays Phoebe's brother Frank Jr, also had a cameo in the earlier seasons - he plays a boy who accidentally throws a condom in Phoebe's guitar case when she's busking.
46. Lisa Kudrow thought Chandler's character was gay when she first read the script.
47. When Rachel is looking for a replacement celebrant to marry Chandler and Monica, she finds a greek orthodox priest coming out of another wedding - the Anastassakis/Papasifakis wedding. Bet you didn't know that Anastassakis is Jennifer's REAL family name! (She's Greek).
48. Marta Kauffman and David Crane, the Friends co-creators, also co-wrote the show's theme song "I'll Be There For You," By the Rembrandts.
49. David Schwimmer directed ten Friends episodes!
50. Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon both appear on Ross's Celebrity Hall Pass list in an earlier season when he's dating Rachel. Both actresses later guest starred on the show as Melissa Warburton (The party planner who is in love with Rachel) and Jessica Lockhart (The actress Joey comes out of his coma to replace on Days of Our Lives).
51. Gunther didn't have a line until the 33rd episode. The first thing he ever spoke on the show was … Wait for it… "Yeah".

52. James Michael Tyler, who was cast as Gunther, was an extra who was given the role because he knew how to operate an espresso machine.
53. Gunther also didn't have a name until the middle of the second season.
54. Lisa Kudrow had already been guest starring as Ursula Buffay for two years before Friends in "Mad About You". They decided to make Phoebe a twin to create a cross-over between the two shows.
55. There were six versions of Phoebe's dollhouse made for "The One With The Dollhouse" - because the plot involved burning them.
56. Ellen DeGeneres turned down the roll of Phoebe when they offered her the gig.
57. The actor who plays Joshua's dad when Rachel is over at their mansion in her negligee is actually Matthew Perry's REAL dad.
58. When the last episode aired, each cast member was given a piece of the sidewalk outside Central Perk as a keepsake.
59. In the last episode, all the characters talk about how they all each lived at Monica's apartment at some point - but they all also lived in Joey's apartment at some point too.
60. When the last series ended, Jennifer Aniston and Brad PItt hosted a dinner party at their home. They served bottles of wine that the producers had saved from the first series.
